CHICKEE, THE PRETTY CHICKEN

CHICKEE, THE PRETTY CHICKEN
by TEACHER NICE GALLEGO, SAGE Gr. 1 Teacher
There was once a farm full of animals that ran around doing whatever they needed to do. The cows were giving milk, the dogs were guarding the flock of sheep, horses were munching hay. The hens were laying eggs while the ducks were taking care of their duckings.
While everybody was busy running about, Chickee, a pretty, perfectly-white chicken loved looking at herself by the pond. She spent most of her time of the day admiring her reflection.
Everybody in the farm saw how beautiful Chickee was but nobody was ever pleased with her behavior. She did not do her part of the work because she did not want to get her ivory-white feathers soiled nor stained.
One day, while Chickee was getting ready for another posh day by the pond, Ribbity Rabbit asked her, "Chickee, we are going to spend the day at the field today to play with kites. Would you like to join us and make new friends?" Chickee answered in a snobbish manner, "Oh, I do not need new friends, I am happy just by myself. Beside, playing in the field will just get me dirty. Eeww!"
"Whatever you say, Chickee. But remember, someday, somehow, you will need other animals, too. In fact, you will need our help, mark my words" said Ribbity Rabbit.
But Chickee just brushed off her shoulder and went on her way to the pond. While walking, Chickee felt that it was quieter than usual. Everywhere she looked, there was nobody around. Then she started to feel lonely but she told herself that she really didn't need anyone's company. While trying to convince herself that everything was fine, Chickee did not notice the deep crack on the ground along her way. By accident, Chickee's leg got caught in the crack and she fell right into the deep pond. She struggled to swim but she couldn't make herself get out of the water. It was a good thing that Duke the Duck came along to help her when he heard her shouting for help. It was then that Chickee realized just how important it is to have friends who can help out during one's most difficult moments.
The End.
