Last November 10, the Nursery Vertical class of BHS took a trip across their street to visit iHop restaurant at W Global Center. This fieldwork was aligned with the term topic of “Trees”, wherein the students were able to learn about the different fruits which come from trees and bushes, and see how it can be used for something delicious!

At the start of the session, Chef Jerome introduced the dish that the children and their guardians would eat that day – pancakes. He elaborated on the ingredients needed to make pancakes, and even did a live demonstration of mixing them all together to make the batter. He also gave them an important tip, a secret from iHop, one which he encouraged them to try at home – to keep the lumps in their batter, because lumps are good. He told them that lumps make pancakes fluffier, therefore making it yummier as well.

In batches, the students were brought inside the kitchen to watch Chef Jerome pour the batter on their flat top grill, flip the pancakes, and then finally serve them. The students were so excited at the sight of such fluffy pancakes! Finally, they brought their pancakes to their tables and got ready to top them off with some of the fruits they learned about during the term – strawberry, blueberry, and banana.

While some liked a few fruits more than the other, it cannot be denied that the students had a blast eating their pancakes! Not only did they get to try something delicious, but they also learned some creative ways to make eating fruits more fun and exciting. At the end of the session, there were no more fruits left because they had eaten it all!
